A Familiar Name Among the Recent NPL Listings – the Now-Bankrupt Exide Technologies

Two more facilities previously owned by Exide Technologies appear on the National Priorities List (NPL), and are now among the highest priority facilities being targeted by EPA for cleanup under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).  Among the five sites added to the NPL on April 8, 2024, are the Exide Baton Rouge site, located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the Former Exide Technologies Laureldale site, located in Laureldale, Pennsylvania.  Exide Technologies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020, and there is ongoing CERCLA litigation pending in the Central District of California regarding the former Exide Technologies’ facility in Vernon, California.  The NPL Site Narrative for Exide Baton Rouge can be found here, the NPL Site Narrative for the Former Exide Technologies Laureldale can be found here, and the Federal Register Notice listing these two sites can be found here.

This rule adds five sites to the General Superfund section of the NPL.
